Entry 4: Reflection

Throughout this course this semester I have learned what Second Language Acquisition really means. According to Ortega (2013) SLA is defined as “…investigates the human capacity to learn languages other than the first, during late childhood, adolescence or adulthood, and once the first language or languages have been acquired” (p.1).   At first when I read the title I just thought that that it was about us students learning a new language, but it never crossed my mind that it was going to be about how people acquire a new language and about L1’s and L2’s. By reading the material I now have a better understanding of SLA.        By reading the material about SLA, this class has prepared me by keeping in mind the needs of my L2’s and knowing the difference between an L1 and an L2. Also, by me having to acquire a new language at an early age is going to help me by having empathy towards the...

Entry 3: Interview with a teacher

Interview Link:  https://youtu.be/YunNWqkikjc I interviewed Ms. Ramirez, she is an 8 th grade math ESL teacher at the school where I am doing my student teaching. In the interview she mentioned how students had a difficult time with print rich problems because they had to make sense of what the words meant in Spanish. She said that the students don’t struggle with the actual math itself, but with the word problems that they have to work with. I can see why this is a problem especially with the students that are barely grasping the English language. They might not be able to connect how to solve the problem or what the problem is asking them to do. I was surprised that Ms. Ramirez said that the students are motivated by being able to teach their parents new English words that they learned in school. It is interesting how some of the students are sharing their knowledge with their parents. According to Ortega, “motivation is usually understood to refer to the desire to...

Entry 2: Interview with a...

Interview Link:  https://youtu.be/gy7YDTTn3-I I interviewed my step-sister. She came from Mexico when she was 7 years old, so the English language was a new concept for her. When she started school she was put in ESL classes from 2 nd grade all through 4 th grade. The teachers that she had only spoke to her in Spanish, so in her classes she wasn’t that much exposed to English. It was until she got to 5 th grade when she had to learn English because the teachers wouldn’t let her speak in Spanish. Also, since the friends that she had only spoke English that made her learn English faster. She was exposed to the English language at home when she listened to her step-siblings speak in English. That also helped her in acquiring the English language. She had a difficult time completing her homework because of the language barrier. She would ask her step-siblings for help on her homework and that helped her in being able to complete her homework. Even though she knows Englis...

Entry 1: Course Introduction

Rosa Serrano's Blog Welcome to the first entry of my blog. Video Learning a different language is hard because one has to learn all the rules that go with the language. One thing is being able to speak it and another thing is being able to write it. Growing up in a Spanish speaking household didn’t mean that I knew how to write certain words that I was able to pronounce. When I took Spanish in middle school, I found out that yes I knew how to speak Spanish fluently, but when it came to writing certain words I didn’t know where the accents went. Sometimes I have trouble remembering a word in English, so I start to say it in Spanish or I might forget the word in Spanish but remember the word in English. Living in the USA sometimes it is difficult to learn a different language because it is frown upon if someone speaks in another language other than English. I wasn’t shocked to read in Ortega (2013) that most countries children only speak one language which manly are the we...
